Ghost of Tsushima: a gentler start to a great adventure

A spoiler-light plan for your early Act I sessions: find your direction, build confidence, and leave room to explore.

1. Finish the introduction, then choose one destination

Follow the opening story until you can explore, then resist planning the whole island at once. Our suggested first loop is a main-story destination, a useful settlement stop, and one optional discovery along the way. You can stretch that across several sessions without needing to clear everything nearby.

Set your destination and use the Guiding Wind to stay oriented. Sucker Punch built movement into the landscape so that the environment itself can point you towards your objective. Look up from the map and enjoy travelling. If an interesting sight pulls you away, you can decide whether tonight is for the story or the detour.

2. Learn a reliable defensive rhythm

On the default PlayStation controls, L1 guards against blockable attacks, a well-timed L1 can parry, and Circle dodges. Watch the attack cues rather than assuming every strike can be blocked. Begin by making space and learning when an enemy commits to an attack; add confident counters as the timing becomes familiar.

Pick one thing to improve in each encounter. Perhaps you will dodge more deliberately, avoid getting surrounded, or stop attacking long enough to see the next warning. If a fight repeatedly frustrates you, take a break or revisit the difficulty settings. You are building familiarity, and you do not owe the game a flawless opening act.

3. Find support before chasing every map marker

Early ally tales are useful places to direct your attention. The Golden Temple is also a helpful stop: vendors offer equipment improvements, and people there can point you towards further activities. Check what is available when you arrive rather than spending resources according to a rigid shopping list.

Before leaving, read the benefits of your current equipment and choose what fits the trouble you are having. Then select a single next objective. This settlement-to-objective rhythm gives a long adventure manageable chapters, especially if you are playing after work and want an easy answer to where you should go next.

4. Leave space for the island to surprise you

A hot spring can improve maximum health, while bamboo strikes can expand Resolve. Try one when it catches your attention. You can also approach encounters through swordplay, ranged attacks, or stealth as those options become available; the game does not use a good-versus-evil karma system to grade those choices.

Close the session with a small note about your next destination. Perhaps you found a beautiful view, became more comfortable defending yourself, or finished a tale you wanted to see through. Those are good stopping points. The purpose of this opening route is to make returning feel inviting, with enough direction to get moving and enough freedom to find your own favourite parts of Tsushima.
